Due to the pandemic, many children have missed out on the opportunity to visit Chinese restaurants and enjoy tea, so they lack of knowledge the culture of drinking tea and eating dim sum.
This activity allows children to understand the characteristics and types of dim sum and experience the exquisiteness of Chinese craftsmanship through the steamer-making activity.
Children can learn about Chinese food culture by simulating restaurant visits, cultivating dietary skills, etiquette, and social skills.

Not only do these simple and eco-friendly toys offer entertainment, but they can also bring joy and happiness.

Brief Descriptions

The “Dragon Boat Festival” falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. The activity allows children to understand the origin and customs of Dragon Boat Festival, telling the story of Qu Yuan and the origin of dragon boat racing.
Through the “Making Zongzi” activity, children can learn about the different materials used to make Zongzi (glutinous rice, mung beans, pork, egg yolks and glutinous rice leaves), the steps of making Zongzi, and try to put the materials on the leaves.
During the sharing activity, children were allowed to open cooked rice dumplings, observe the difference between raw and cooked rice dumplings, and taste the traditional food “rice dumplings” together.

Facial makeup is the painting on the faces of traditional opera actors and is one of the traditional Chinese arts. By appreciating videos and pictures, children can observe the different shapes of facial makeup and understand the basic characteristics of Chinese facial makeup (most facial makeup is symmetrical, and different figures and roles have different patterns). During the process, children are taught the basic procedures and steps of facial painting, and children are guided to abide by specific specifications in their free creations. After the activity is completed, children’s works are displayed to create an atmosphere that promotes traditional art.

In the Chinese Culture Exhibition, display children’s paper-cut art works and learn to appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese paper-cut art.

The panda is not only a treasure of the Chinese people but also a beloved animal among children. In this activity, children had the opportunity to apply their ink painting skills to depict pandas. Through watching a video demonstration, children carefully observed the ink’s transformations, which ignited their imagination and creativity. They were able to express the appearance, characteristics, and shape of pandas from various perspectives. Each artwork possessed a unique style, showcasing the adorable nature of the beloved Chinese character ‘Panda’ on a piece of Chinese Xuan paper.

The Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) marks the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar and is the most solemn and lively ancient traditional festival among the people. By making Koi Fish Chinese rice cakes, children can understand the symbolic meaning behind them and deepen their understanding of traditional food. The teacher demonstrated the basic steps of making rice cakes, and the children made their own koi fish rice cakes. Once finished, the children were encouraged to take them home and share with their families. Through this activity, children can experience the joy of preparing food, learn the traditional methods of making festival food, and play a significant role in preserving and inheriting our cultural heritage.

During the activity, children experienced lanterns as traditional Chinese handicrafts and realized that using lanterns as decorations during festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lantern Festival adds a festive atmosphere. By manipulating lanterns, children understand that lanterns can provide lighting. Additionally, they can share their past experiences of playing with lanterns during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Children also expressed great interest in making lanterns to decorate the classroom. Therefore, they created their own lanterns through origami, pasting, and paper cutting.

Objectives

・To understand the features of different Chinese fonts.

Brief Descriptions

First, play the “Bingo” game with children, and each child needs to hold two cards and take turns passing one card to their classmates in the same direction. If children hold the same cards, children should shout “Bingo!” and show the pair of cards. With teacher’s guidance, children try to name the characteristics of different fonts after observation and comparison, then to design different types of fonts with online font-designing websites . After learning various Chinese fonts, children choose a single word from their name as a representative and have to draw the word on a foam board under guidance. Then, children cast the foam board as a Chinese seal with bamboo sticks, and stamp their personal works after coloring the stamp. Hence, to help children experience the structure of Chinese characters through the extended use of Chinese seals.
